Festival for the Dawn of the Year February 5, 2011 New Amsterdam Early Childhood Center, 1 Avenue B (at Houston St.) This time of year marks the midway point between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox. It is known across many cultural traditions as a time of purification, renewal, and preparation for the coming season. Across the centuries in Europe, farmers have begun to turn over their beds in anticipation of the first planting. In Japan, young and old alike celebrate by throwing beans and shouting to banish evil and invite in good deeds. In China, this season marks the beginning of the new calendar year, and cut plum branches adorn the house, hinting at the coming beauty of spring. Please join us in celebration of this dawn of the year on Saturday, February 5th from 10am to 12pm. Adults and children of the New Amsterdam community are invited to join us to dip beeswax candles and play together before enjoying an 11:30am puppet play, which will be performed by the New Amsterdam Faculty. A light lunch will also be served.
